Looking forward to this tonight, though it will be strange without the presence of Pete Townshend and all that he brings musically and visually, however, I am sure his brother Simon will make his own mark on the music.
“Beat Surrender” was The Jam‘s final single released on 26 November 1982.
It became the band’s fourth #1 UK single for two weeks in December 1982. The 7″ was backed by the B-side “Shopping”.
A double 7″ ( as per sleeve above) and 12″ single version was available with additional studio cover versions of The Chi-Lites‘ “Stoned Out Of My Mind”, Curtis Mayfield‘s classic “Move On Up”, and Edwin Starr‘s “War”.
The song was a turning point for Paul Weller as he left behind his initial mod influences of The Who and Small Faces to adopt the more recognised influences of the modernists Soul and Jazz and as such hinted at the “style” to come with his next band, The Style Council.
The decision for the Jam’s final single was between “Beat Surrender” and “A Solid Bond In Your Heart”, later a Style Council single in 1983. The Jam’s version of “A Solid Bond In Your Heart” was not released until 1992 on the Extras album, although Rick Buckler, the Jam’s drummer, claimed that the Style Council had pinched his original drum track recording.
“Beat Surrender” was previewed live on the first ever episode on The Tube, a live music show broadcast on Channel 4, on 5 November 1982.

With it being Father’s Day here in the UK on Sunday I set of this evening bleary eyed to Braehead to do a bit of relevant shopping.
It was only when I set foot in HMV that the concept of time passing hit me straight between the eyes.
It seems like only yesterday I was buying my Dad albums such as “100 Great Church Organ Tunes” or later Shirley Bassey “The Stripper” yet there in front on me on the HMV Father’s Day special display was “Dad’s Rock” 3CD set, “The Old Grey Whistle Test 40th Special Edition” and “New Wave For Dad”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In shock I settled for a book token from Waterstones and returned home and to cheer my self up I downloaded the aforesaid Old Grey Whistle Test CD, 60 tracks for under £10 many of them exclusive live recordings from the show.

It is frightening to think that it was 35 years ago today that I first saw The Who live in concert and which turned out to be the only time I got to see them with Keith Moon.
£4 I call that a bargain the best I ever had.
This clip from the film “The Kids Are Alright” was filmed a year later but remains representative of the night at Celtic park where the laser show could be seen from miles around.
ROGER DALTREY, the iconic lead singer of The Who, will perform The Who’s legendary rock opera TOMMY from start to finish. (The Who never actually played the complete TOMMY.) Daltrey premiered the show at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust on March 25th and is now taking it on the road.
Employing striking visuals to accompany the music, every show will be an unforgettable experience for lifelong fans and newcomers alike, who will be treated not only to the full majesty of TOMMY, but also to a variety of Who Classics and more.
TOMMY is one of the most acclaimed and defining works of the rock era. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998, the 20 million-selling double album spawned a successful 1975 film of the same name, with DALTREY playing the title role, which re-underlined its place in the cultural firmament.
DALTREY is pulling out all the stops with a full backing band that will bring the rock opera’s wide-ranging sounds and textures vibrantly to life. Joining him will be Frank Simes (guitar), Scott Deavours (drums), Jon Button(Bass), Loren Gold (Keyboards) and also on guitar will be Simon Townshend, younger brother of The Who’s guitarist PETE TOWNSHEND.
Commenting on the tour, Pete Townshend says “Great to see Roger performing TOMMY with his band in 2011. I will be there in spirit and Roger has my complete and most loving support. Roger is touring his unique concert version of TOMMY using his faithful presentation of the original work as the backbone for a set of wider material. It is wonderful to hear the way Roger and his new band re-interpret the old Who songs.”
Throughout this tour, songs such as “Pinball Wizard,” “The Acid Queen,” “I’m Free,” “See Me, Feel Me” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It” promise to transport attendees into the world of this classic album with shuddering intensity and poetic power.
A 1989 tour by The Who saw them reprise TOMMY live. The upcoming DALTREY tour will differ in that all of the album’s songs will be played. When DALTREY and his band performed TOMMY in March 2011 at a sell out concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, The Independent called the show “a faithful reading… The stand-outs, ‘I’m Free’, ‘See Me, Feel Me’ and the anthemic climax of ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ are rousing.” Afterwards, the Who blogosphere was alight with comments from long standing fans lucky enough to see the show. These included comments like “Roger nailed Tommy” and “Last night’s concert was the best I’ve ever seen – what a great band!”
Roger describes the show and visuals as “A Tommy Show for today’s audience from a different perspective.”
“TOMMY, an album that tells a story about a “deaf, dumb, and blind boy” who becomes the leader of a messianic movement, will always be seen as a turning point for the band,” adds DALTREY. “Within it, I found the new voice of The Who and the band found its stride in making that music, adjusting it, using all that knowledge that we had from jazz and the blues into making it work in a rock way.”
The much-anticipated three-week tour launches on July 3rd at RAGLEY HALL, ALCESTER and concludes on July 24th at POWDERHAM CASTLE, EXETER.

From mid-1970 to early 1974, The Who, or in particular Pete Townshend, undertook an amazing and peculiar journey in which they struggled to follow-up “Tommy” with a yet bigger and better “rock opera”.
The other,” Quadrophenia”, was as down-to-earth as the multimedia Lifehouse was futuristic; issued as a double album in 1973, it eventually became esteemed as one of the Who’s finest achievements, despite initial unfavourable comparisons to Tommy and remains my favourite album of all time!
Along the way, the group’s visionary songwriter, Pete Townshend, battled conflicts within the band and their management, as well as struggling against the limits of the era’s technology as a pioneering synthesizer user and a conceptualist trying to combine rock with film and theatre. The results included some of rock’s most ambitious failures, and some of its most spectacular triumphs.
In “Won’t Get Fooled Again: The Who From Lifehouse to Quadrophenia”, noted rock writer and historian Richie Unterberger documents this intriguing period in detail, drawing on many new interviews; obscure rare archive sources and recordings; and a vast knowledge of the music of the times.

There was a sense of real anticpation for the highlight of this years series of concerts in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust held at the Royal Albert Hall last week because The Who hadn’t performed Tommy since 1989.
Anticipation filled the air as Roger Daltrey led his own touring band through the performance of “Tommy” plus some other Who classics and solo material, the big question was would Pete Townshend make an appearance…..of couse he would.
There have been so many questions flying around concerning the future of The Who. How bad is Pete’s hearing? Would The Who ever tour again as a band? Would they ever, indeed, play together for the occasional gig, the aswer will without doubt be yes but who knowns when and who knows where.
