The Endless Note

Sound Affects

The Jam‘s 1980 album ‘Sound Affects’ is set to be reissued.

This was their fifth studio album and the cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various Sound Effects records produced by the BBC during the 1970s.

Musical influences noted include post-punk groups such as Wire, Gang Of Four, and Joy Division and, particularly evident in Rick Buckler‘s drumming, Michael Jackson‘s Off the Wall album. Frontman Paul Weller said at the time that he considered the album a cross between Off the Wall and Revolver.

For me this together with “All Mod Cons” was the peak of The Jam’s album related output.

The album features the group’s second UK number one single, “Start!”, built around exact copies of the bassline and guitar solos from The Beatles’ “Taxman”, the lead cut on Revolver.

The opening track “”Pretty Green” includes a funk bassline and rhythm with melodic guitar breaks and psychedelic sound effects.

“That’s Entertainment” originally became a UK Hit Single due to fans of the group buying it on single format as an import.

The album has been remastered and will be re-released on November 1 along with a host of previously unreleased rarities.

As well as the original album it will include a second disc of rarities including covers of songs by The Kinks and The Beatles, as well as a selection of demos.
