Live At Leeds – 40 Years On

The Who are preparing to release the 40th anniversary edition of ‘Live At Leeds’.

It’s simply one of the most provocative live experiences around. ‘Live At Leeds’ was released in 1970 and features a rock band in full flight, with The Who’s breathtaking show captured in audio.

Becoming one of the band’s best loved albums, ‘Live At Leeds’ captured four musicians at their absolute peak. Behind them lay a career in R&B, pop art and concept albums – ahead of them lay stadium dominance.

Re-issued previously, ‘Live At Leeds’ is set to be spruced up for its 40th anniversary. The Who are to release the original 1970 concert in its entirety, alongside a newly discovered tape of a show the night after.

Initially, the band were supposed to be caught in action during a student show at Hull. However the tapes were damaged, and the project was shelved allowing the iconic ‘Live At Leeds’ to come into being.

“Hull was a better gig than Leeds,” recalls Roger Daltrey. “I remember it like it was yesterday, although in retrospect ‘Live At Hull’ doesn’t really trip off the tongue!”

Now for the first time the Hull show is set to gain an official release, alongside its better known counterpart. In a special 40th anniversary edition fans will get both shows, as well as a vinyl reproduction of the original six track album and a replica seven inch single.

Alongside this fans will be able to browse through a new 64 page hardcover book including rare photos and memorabilia from the initial release.

Finished off with a classic Pete Townsend poster, the full set will be housed in a hard-back box with cover artwork reproducing the original black stamped vinyl first UK pressing.

The Who are set to release the expanded edition of ‘Live At Leeds’ on November 15th.

This will be the 5th different release of this album surely we won’t be fooled again.

Whatever happened to the promised “Live At Leeds 2” which was recorded on the 35th anniversary back at Leeds University?
