Helpless Dancer

The Endless Note

Charlotte Gainsbourg

Charlotte Gainsbourg may be the daughter of the ultimate Euro-glam couple, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, but her new album IRM, French for MRI, is a Beck collaboration and is a tough-minded trip through some serious adult trauma: the 2007 cerebral hemorrhage, which she originally thought was a week long headache, that nearly killed her.

This is the follow up to her Nigel Godrich/Jarvis Cocker-sponsored comeback, 5:55, in 2006.

Beck’s keyboards echo the sound of an emergency-room brain scan and  turns a brush with death into something as emotional as it is detached. There’s even a recording of an MRI machine on the album.

“IRM” is a stark hospital scene (“Following the X-ray eyes/From the cortex to the medulla”), and “Dandelion” explores melancholy with some French wit. As Gainsbourg sings, “Dumb luck is the only luck I ever knew.”
