The Endless Note

Uriah Heep

Played this album last night as I continued my music reorganisation, this album was fundemental in my early music appreciation development as it was one of my first “rock” purchases and it being a “Double Live Album In Colour Gatefold Sleeve” it set me off on a continual appreciation of live albums.

In addition to a live version of the band’s hit “Easy Livin'”, the record includes classic live cuts such as “Sweet Lorraine”, “Sunrise”, and an extended live version of “July Morning”. While on tour in the States, Live 73 reached #13 in the UK charts.

The original album packaging as noted above was a lavish affair, typical of the early-1970s. Being a 2LP set it was a gatefold sleeve, with centre-pages featuring photographs of the band members.

Uriah Heep were my first band and the “Sweet Freedom” album was the first “new release” album that I bought from a favourite band as it was released in 1973 as well just a few months after the release of the live album.

Sweet Freedom is the sixth studio album released by Uriah Heep.

The original vinyl release was as a gatefold-sleeve, reproducing the lyrics within. There was also a central page with a photograph of each band member.

It was the first album of Uriah Heep’s to be released by Warner Bros. Records in the USA.

Arguably the best-known song from Sweet Freedom is “Stealin’.

“Stealin'” – Uriah Heep

Take me across the water
cause I need some place to hide
I done the ranchers daughter
And I sure did hurt his pride

Well, theres a
Hundred miles of desert
Lies between his hide and mine
I dont need no food
And no water, lord
cos Im running out of time

Fightin, killin, wine and women
Gonna put me to my grave
Runnin, hidin, losin, cryin
Nothing left to save but my life

Stood on a ridge
And shunned religion
Thinking the world was mine
I made my break and a big mistake
Stealin, when i
Shouldve been buyin

All that fightin, killin
Wine and those women
Gonna put me to an early grave
Runnin, hidin, losin, cryin
Nothing left to save but my life, life…

So I stood on a ridge
And shunned religion
Thinking the world was mine
I made my break and a big mistake
Stealin, when i
Shouldve been buyin
I was stealin
When I shouldve been buyin
I was stealin
When I shouldve been buyin
Stealin, when i
Shouldve been buyin ..
I was stealin …
