Helpless Dancer

The Endless Note

Stephen Stills

Stephen StillsStephen Stills  (Stephen Arthur Stills born January 3, 1945, Dallas, Texas) is an American guitarist and singer/songwriter best known for his work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash (and Young). He has performed on a professional level in several other bands as well as maintaining a solo career at the same time. Stills was ranked #28 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 2003 list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

“Stephen Stills” is an eponymous rock album by the musician famous for his long-time membership in Crosby, Stills, & Nash. It consists of compositions by Stephen Stills, and is one of four high-profile albums released by each partner of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their chart-topping Déjà Vu album of 1970.

The album features an array of well-known guest musicians, unsurprisingly including David Crosby and Graham Nash, who contribute vocals. Ringo Starr drums on two tracks under the pseudonym “Richie,” which he also used for his contribution to the London Sessions album by American bluesman The Howlin’ Wolf, recorded in England the same year. Stills’ album is also the only album in rock and roll history to which both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix supplied guitar work. Hendrix would be dead before the album was released; Stills dedicated the album to “James Marshall Hendrix.”

The song “We Are Not Helpless” was written in response to Neil Young’sHelpless” from the CSNY album, and both “Black Queen” and “Love the One You’re With” have remained in the performing repertoire respectively of both Stills and CSN. “Love the One You’re With,” Stills’ biggest solo hit single to date, peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 19, 1970, and another 45 pulled from the album, “Sit Yourself Down,” went to #37 on March 27, 1971.

Here is one of the tracks that features Jimi Hendrix.

“Old Times Good Times” – Jimi Hendrix

“Love The One You’re With” – Stephen Stills

If you’re down and confused
And you don’t remember who you’re talking to,
Concentration slips away
Cause you’re baby is so far away

CHORUS:
Well there’s a rose in the fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can’t be with the one you love honey
Love the one you’re with, Love the one you’re with,
Love the one you’re with, Love the one you’re with.

Don’t be angry – don’t be sad
Don’t sit crying over good times you’ve had
There’s a girl right next to you
And she’s just waiting for something to do

CHORUS:
Well there’s a rose in the fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can’t be with the one you love honey
Love the one you’re with, Love the one you’re with,
Love the one you’re with, Love the one you’re with.

Doo doo doo doo “>doo doo doo do-do
Doo doo doo doo “>doo doo doo do-do
Doo doo doo doo “>doo doo doo do-do
Do-do-do – do-do-do
wo-o o “>o “>o “>o o o o, wo-o o o o o,
wo-o o “>o o o o, a a a-o
wo-o o “>o o o o, a-o
Love the one you’re with,Love the one you’re with,
Love the one you’re with,Love the one you’re with,

Turn your heartache right into joy
Cause she’s a girl and you’re a boy
Get it together, make it nice
You ain’t gonna need anymore advice
