Saturday Soul – Kiki Dee

Kiki Dee featuring on Saturday Soul…some may say surely some mistake, however others will be well aware that Kiki was the first white Britist artist  to be signed to Tamla Motown Records.

Despite this fact the girl born as Pauline Mathhews in 1947 remains best known for her duet with Elton John on “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” a No 1 hit on both sides of the Atlantic back in 1976.

She clocked up 3 No 1 singles and eight Top 10 hits in the UK mostly whilst signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records but she started as a backing singer to Dusty Springfield and her soulfull voice attracted Tamla Motown who released her album “Great Expectations” on their label in 1970.

Kiki Dee was also a songwriter and one of her own songs “Loving & Free” was the lead track on a 1973 “EP” though ultimately the other “A” Side track a cover of  the French song “Amoureuse” by Véronique Sanson with English lyrics by Gary Osbourne gained the more airplay.
