The Sensational Alex Harvey Band

In 1974 The Sensational Alex Harvey Band went into the studio to record their third album and had hired Shel Talmy as producer.

Talmy had in the 60’s been the producer for the early Kinks and Who output and it was believed by the band that he would bring a hard hitting melodic edge to the SAHB music.

On completion the group felt that the end product had not delivered on their expectations and instead of giving the band extra power much of the material had been steered down a softer avenue with brass and girlie backing vocals diluting rather than enhancing the bands sound.

As usual Talmy ran off back to the States with the tapes in the huff (as he did with The Who and The Small Faces when both bands clocked on early that Talmy wanted them to toe the line to his sound rather than develop their own} and as such the album lay unissued until late last year when agreement was reached with the remaining members of the band and Talmy for a release.

The album is a historical cross roads for the band and will be of great interest to SAHB fans.

The eventual third album “The Impossible Dream” featured many of the original songs include in “Hot City” but in amended form and became a classic that the original concept cannot match.
