Sunday Jazz – Summertime
Summer arrived this weekend and as such there could only be one choice for Sunday Jazz…… “Summertime”
“Summertime” – Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong
Summertime, and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy’s rich and your ma is good-lookin’
So hush little baby, Don’t you cry
One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky
But ’til that morning, there ain’t nothin’ can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin’ by
One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky
But ’til that morning, there ain’t nothin can harm you
With Daddy and Mammy standin’ by
As a bonus here is an instrumental version by Chet Baker
Saturday Soul – Mavis Staples
This week it is time for some live soul music from the great Mavis Staples this track is taken from the album “Live Hope at the Hideout”
The chosen track is “Wade In The Water” which is an old gospel song first published back in 1901 which contained eight instructions for fugitive slaves on how to avoid capture.
“Wade In The Water” (Live) – Mavis Staples
Wade in the water
Wade in the water children
Wade in the water
Don’t you know that
God’s gonna trouble the water
Don’t you know that
God’s gonna trouble the water
I stepped in water and the water is cold
Don’t you know that
God’s gonna trouble the water
Said it chilled my body but not my soul
Don’t you know that
God’s gonna trouble the water
[CHORUS]
Well I went to the water one day to pray
Don’t you know that
God’s gonna trouble the water
And my soul got happy and I stayed all day
Don’t you know that
God’s gonna trouble the water
[CHORUS]
There is love
(In the water)
In the water
(In the water)
There is joy yeah
(In the water)
In your water yeah
(In the water)
Your peace
(In the water)
Is in the water
(In the water)
Your deliverance
(In the water)
Is in the water yeah
(In the water)
Oh step in, step in
(In the water)
Joy is in the water
In the water yeah
(In the water)
Oh step in, step in
(In the water)
Love is in the water
(In the water)
Oh step in yeah
(In the water)
For deliverance
(In the water)
Everything
(In the water)
In the water yeah
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
Everything you need
(In the water)
God’s gonna trouble the water
God’s gonna trouble the water
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
God’s gonna trouble the water
(Ooh)
God’s gonna trouble the water
Oh wade in the water
Fiona Friday – Serendipity
Over the holiday weekend past I watched “Serendipity” which was one of Fiona’s all time favourite movies.
Although a bit of a woman’s weepie the fact that it featured John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale who are two of my favourite actors gave me a man’s excuse to enjoy it just as much.
It is worth it’s weight in gold if only for the reason that it introduced Fiona to the music of Nick Drake with this song as featured in the movie going on to be one of her favourites.
Here are a couple of other songs from the soundtrack
“Waiting In Vain” – Annie Lennox

Happy Birthday – Blue
My big boy “Blue” is eight today, how time passes, him and “Bonnie” keep me sane…….Happy Birthday “Seema”

Blast From The Past – The Stylophone
Everyone will remember the “Stylophone” as originally advertised in the UK by Rolf Harris, perhaps less people will realise that it still has a cult following and can still be purchased.
Here is a “Stylophone Geek”
……………………..and as endorsed by Jack White

New Music – Brakes
Brakes prove once more that there is still life in guitar rock, their third album “Touchdown” was released last month and the music reflects a band that like to play live.
They are known in the US as Brakes Brakes Brakes to avoid confusion with US group The Brakes.

Here is the video for the first single from the album “Hey Hey”
Blue Monday – Jimmy Reed
This week’s Blue Monday was influenced by a weekend of searching for a good deal on car insurance and whilst this song tells a tale about a different type of insurance it still seems appropriate.
So here is a Jimmy Reed classic
“Take Out Some Insurance” – Jimmy Reed

There isn’t a great deal of Jimmy Reed footage around so here is Stevie Ray’s brother Jimmy with a tribute cover of “You Upset My Mind”
Sunday Jazz – Witchcraft
One of my favourite programmes from my time as a mere nipper is still being re-run on the box and even today still gives me a warm glow inside.
Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha in Bewitched was without doubt my first crush, the programme ran from 1964 -1972 with the best years being 1964-1969 when Dick York was the unfortunate Darrin.
As for the jazz…well here is Frank Sinatra
You can buy the music of Frank Sinatra HERE
You can buy Bewitched DVD’s HERE
Saturday Soul – Ike & Tina Turner
Tina Turner may have made her fortune in the 80’s during the MOR/AOR MTV era but prior to that she had some “soul” hits as part of Ike & Tina Turner
This was one of my favourites
“Every Day I Have To Cry” – Ike & Tina Turner

Fiona Friday – The Turtles
This song by The Turtles was one of Fiona’s favourite songs.
“Happy Together” – The Turtles
Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it’s only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So happy together
If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together
I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it has to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We’re happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)
